1. What Is the Sikshashree Scheme?

Sikshashree is a pre-matric scholarship of the Government of West Bengal. It was introduced in 2014-15 by merging the older Book Grant and Maintenance Grant schemes, which gave small amounts and were slow and complicated to disburse. According to the official scheme description, the goal is to give SC students of Classes 5 to 8 smooth, transparent and efficient assistance, improve participation at the pre-matric stage and cut dropouts, especially among girls. Other sources report that the scheme is now also available to ST students and is run jointly by the Backward Classes Welfare and Tribal Development departments.
