Earlier posts mentioned a fixed 7-day limit. There is no such official limit for a wrong transfer, but speed still matters because it improves the chance of recovery.
- Wrong transfer: report within the first hour or day, and raise the app and bank complaint at once.
- Unauthorised transaction: report to your bank within 3 working days of the alert for zero customer liability under RBI rules.
- Bank reply: wait 30 days, then you can approach the RBI Ombudsman.
- Ombudsman filing: within 90 days under the 2026 scheme.
Final Talk on File a Wrong UPI Transaction Complaint Online
Report the problem first in your UPI app and bank, then escalate to NPCI, and finally to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in if the bank does not reply in 30 days or the reply is unsatisfactory. Keep the transaction ID, screenshots and every complaint number. A wrongly sent amount mostly depends on the receiver’s consent, so act quickly and double-check the UPI ID before every payment.
Public Safety Tips To Avoid Wrong UPI Payments And Fraud
Most wrong and fraudulent UPI transactions can be avoided with a few simple habits. Share these tips with family, shopkeepers and customers at your CSC.
Before You Pay
- Check the receiver name shown by the UPI app before you tap Pay. If the name looks wrong, stop.
- Re-read the UPI ID or mobile number digit by digit. A single wrong digit sends money to a stranger.
- For a large amount, send a small test payment first and confirm with the receiver.
- Scan a QR code or approve a request only when you are paying. You never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money.
- Be careful with Collect or Pay requests from unknown people. Decline them.
Never Share These
- UPI PIN, OTP, card PIN, CVV or net banking password, even with someone claiming to be from a bank, NPCI, RBI or your UPI app.
- Screen sharing or remote access codes. Do not install apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer at the request of a caller.
- Photos of your debit card, Aadhaar-linked bank details or UPI QR screenshots with personal information.
Avoid Fake Customer Care And Fake Refund Scams
- Do not search for a helpline number on social media or search results and call it blindly. Scammers publish fake numbers. Use the help section inside the official app or the official bank website.
- No genuine officer will ask you to send money to receive a refund.
- Do not click refund or KYC update links received by SMS, WhatsApp or email.
- If someone says money was sent to you by mistake and asks you to return it, do not send it directly. Contact your bank first, because this can be a fraud method.
- If you receive money by mistake yourself, do not spend it. Inform your bank so it can be returned through the proper process.
Protect Your Phone And Account
- Use a screen lock and a UPI PIN that is not your birth year or mobile number.
- Turn on SMS and app alerts for every debit.
- Keep apps updated and install them only from Google Play or the App Store.
- Set a daily UPI limit that suits your needs.
- If your phone is lost or stolen, call your bank at once to block UPI and your SIM provider to block the SIM.
What To Do In The First Hour
- Take a screenshot of the transaction and note the UTR or transaction ID.
- Raise a complaint in your UPI app and call your bank.
- For fraud, call 1930 and file at cybercrime.gov.in without delay.
- Call NPCI on 1800-120-1740 if the app and bank do not help.
- Keep every complaint number, then follow the 30-day RBI Ombudsman route if there is no reply.
