Quick Answer

  • ✓New Aadhaar enrolment is free.
  • ✓Carry original documents (not photocopies).
  • ✓Adults need 1 ID proof + 1 address proof. A passport or voter ID can work as both.
  • ✓Children below 5 need the birth certificate + parent’s Aadhaar.

New Aadhaar Enrollment Documents Children Below 5 Years

Parent or guardian must come with the child. No fingerprints are taken, only a photo.

DOCUMENTS TO CARRY

  • ✓Birth certificate of the child (compulsory if born on or after 1 October 2023)
  • ✓Aadhaar of the parent / guardian (the parent’s Aadhaar number is needed, and one parent verifies with fingerprint)
  • ✓NRI child: child’s valid Indian passport

Remember: The child’s address is copied from the parent’s Aadhaar. Update the child’s fingerprints and iris at age 5 and 15.

New Aadhaar Enrollment Documents Children 5 to 18 Years

Parent or guardian signs the form. Fingerprints, iris and photo are taken.

DOCUMENTS TO CARRY

  • ✓Option 1: parent’s Aadhaar + child’s birth certificate (or other proof of relationship)
  • ✓Option 2: child’s own document: passport, domicile certificate, SC/ST/OBC certificate, or board mark-sheet
  • ✓NRI child: child’s valid Indian passport

Remember: Choose Option 1 if you have the parent’s Aadhaar, as it is the easiest.

New Aadhaar Enrollment Documents Adults Above 18 Years

You apply on your own documents. Fingerprints, iris and photo are taken.

DOCUMENTS TO CARRY

  • ✓1 Proof of Identity (ID proof): for example passport, PAN card, voter ID, driving licence
  • ✓1 Proof of Address: for example passport, voter ID, ration card, electricity / water / gas bill (not older than 3 months), rent agreement
  • ✓Date of Birth proof (optional): birth certificate, passport or school / board mark-sheet

Remember: The name on your documents is copied into Aadhaar exactly as written, so check spelling before you go. Full lists are given further below.

Head of Family (HoF) Based Enrolment

Use this when the person has no ID or address proof. A family member who already has Aadhaar vouches for them.

DOCUMENTS TO CARRY

  • ✓HoF’s Aadhaar (HoF must be 18 or above and must come to the centre)
  • ✓Proof of relationship showing both names: birth certificate (for a child), passport, ration card, or a family entitlement document
  • ✓HoF’s fingerprint verification at the centre

Remember: The HoF’s address is used for the new Aadhaar. For children below 5, parents are the HoF.

NRIs (Indian Citizens Living Abroad)

An NRI means an Indian passport holder who does not live in India.

DOCUMENTS TO CARRY

  • ✓Valid Indian passport (the only accepted ID proof for NRIs)
  • ✓Email ID (compulsory for NRIs)
  • ✓Address proof: the passport if it shows your address, or any other accepted address proof
  • ✓NRI children: the child’s own Indian passport

Remember: NRIs do not need to have lived 182 days in India. Use Form 1 if your address is in India, and Form 2 if your address is outside India.
